[Alpha Biz= Kim Jisun] Kolon Group is reviewing the sale of select business units, including a semiconductor film division under Kolon Industries, as part of efforts to secure funding for new growth initiatives.
According to industry sources on May 7, Kolon Industries is discussing potential divestments within its materials segment, which encompasses industrial materials and chemical products—core pillars of the company’s operations.
The units under review reportedly include the semiconductor film business, as well as certain electronic materials and fashion brands. However, the semiconductor film division is understood to have a relatively smaller revenue base compared to the company’s main businesses.
As of the end of last year, Kolon Industries recorded KRW 2.3021 trillion in revenue from its industrial materials segment and KRW 1.2499 trillion from its chemical materials segment.
The restructuring move is seen as a response to weakening financial performance in recent years. The company reported consolidated operating profit of KRW 108.8 billion in 2025, down 31.4% year-on-year.
Analysts point to declining profitability in commodity materials amid a global economic slowdown and aggressive supply expansion from Chinese competitors as key factors. The display business, once considered a future growth driver, is also increasingly viewed as a mature or declining segment.
