[Alpha Biz= Kim Jisun] The Korean Metal Workers’ Union has intensified its opposition to the planned sale of the lamp business unit of Hyundai Mobis, staging a large-scale rally as strike actions expand across affiliated workplaces.

Union members from multiple Hyundai Mobis-related sites, including the Gimcheon Hyundai Mobis branch and Hyundai IHL, held a mass resolution rally on May 18, drawing approximately 2,500 participants.

The protest comes as workers at Hyundai IHL have continued a full-scale strike for 22 consecutive days, while four union branches at Unitus joined the strike action the same day.

The union argues that Hyundai Mobis’ plan to sell its lamp division to OP Mobility threatens job security and workers’ livelihoods. It is calling for direct negotiations with Hyundai Mobis management and concrete measures to guarantee employment stability.

Union leaders criticized the restructuring as unilateral, claiming it has proceeded without sufficient consultation with workers, thereby increasing uncertainty on the ground. They are demanding clear commitments on job protection and the preservation of working conditions.

The union had previously voted in favor of strike action on May 13, calling for the suspension of the sale and direct engagement with the parent company. It has indicated plans to escalate its response if demands are not met.

Meanwhile, labor and management at Unitus are understood to have discussed compensation measures, including transition payments and “new start” incentives for employees affected by the potential sale, though negotiations remain ongoing.
