[Alpha Biz= Paul Lee] LG Electronics announced on November 20 that it has signed a patent licensing agreement with Amazon covering LG’s Wi-Fi standard-essential patents (SEPs). Under the agreement, Amazon will receive licenses to use LG’s Wi-Fi SEP technologies across its major products.

The licensing deal allows Amazon to apply LG’s Wi-Fi SEP portfolio to key Amazon devices, including its Alexa AI speakers, Fire TV streaming devices, and Fire tablets. Standard-essential patents are technologies that must be used by any product complying with international Wi-Fi standards.

LG Electronics holds one of the industry’s strongest global patent portfolios across communications, Wi-Fi, broadcasting, and codec technologies. According to the company’s latest semiannual report, LG owns 97,880 registered patents worldwide, roughly half of which qualify as standard-essential patents.

LG is currently engaged in active Wi-Fi SEP licensing discussions with multiple global companies, and additional agreements are expected to follow.

Beyond wireless communications, LG Electronics continues to strengthen its patent leadership in future technologies such as artificial intelligence and quantum computing. Last year, the company won the top Sejong the Great Award at the Korea Intellectual Property Office’s “2024 Patent Technology Awards” for its pioneering patent on in-vehicle augmented reality (AR) navigation.
