[Alpha Biz= Paul Lee] Samsung Biologics is set to finalize the acquisition of its production facility in Rockville, Maryland, U.S., by March and is reviewing plans to expand production capacity. In Incheon’s Songdo district, the company has secured a site for a third bio campus and aims to develop it as a “smart factory” in collaboration with Samsung Electronics.

John Rim, CEO of Samsung Biologics, speaking at the main stage of the world’s largest pharma and biotech investment event, the JP Morgan Healthcare Conference (JPMHC), held at the Westin St. Francis Hotel in San Francisco on January 13, stated, “We will continue to actively explore strategic M&A opportunities, including facilities like the Rockville plant, this year.”

In December 2025, following several years of review, Samsung Biologics announced it would acquire the U.S. Rockville plant from one of its clients, GlaxoSmithKline (GSK). Rim told reporters on January 12 that, following the announcement, many clients have requested production in the U.S. “If the acquisition is completed by March, we plan to expand the plant on idle land to a maximum capacity of 100,000 liters and pursue additional orders,” he said.

In Korea, Samsung Biologics signed a contract in December 2025 for land to develop its third bio campus in Songdo, laying the groundwork for additional production facilities. Songdo currently hosts the first bio campus with Plants 1–4 and the second campus with Plant 5. Construction of Plant 6 is also planned within this year.

Rim emphasized, “Combining the Songdo and U.S. capacities will create a total production capacity of 845,000 liters, establishing an overwhelming global No. 1 position. The multi-location manufacturing system across Korea and the U.S. will allow us to respond flexibly to customer demands.”
