[Alpha Biz= Kim Jisun] Samsung Electro-Mechanics has begun supplying multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs) to a U.S. aerospace company, marking its entry into the space industry.
MLCCs are ultra-small capacitors made by stacking ceramic dielectric layers and metal electrodes, serving as essential components that regulate the flow of electricity.
According to industry sources on March 17, Samsung Electro-Mechanics is providing high-performance MLCCs designed for use in extreme space environments. Thousands of MLCCs are typically required for a single satellite to ensure stable power supply under harsh conditions.
The company has previously identified the MLCC business as a key future growth driver.
As part of efforts to move beyond its heavy reliance on the smartphone sector, Samsung Electro-Mechanics is diversifying its portfolio into areas such as aerospace, artificial intelligence (AI), and advanced electronic components.
In May last year, CEO Chang Duck-hyun said the company is preparing to secure growth opportunities in high-potential sectors including humanoid robotics and aerospace.
Industry observers say the latest collaboration could lead to an expansion of supplied components from MLCCs to substrates.
Separately, Samsung Electronics is also reportedly developing AI modem chips for satellite communications.
Market outlook for the sector remains positive. According to global market research firm Mordor Intelligence, the low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite market is expected to grow from $197.1 billion last year to $304.7 billion by 2030.
