[Alpha Biz= Paul Lee] Daehan Shipbuilding has been ordered to suspend operations at its No.1 fabrication plant after a fatal workplace accident involving a foreign worker, the company disclosed on March 3.

According to the filing, operations at the plant were halted following the death of a 35-year-old Cambodian worker who was crushed by a one-ton ship block during heavy material handling operations at around 11:40 a.m. on Feb. 28. The accident occurred at the company’s shipyard in Yeongam County, South Jeolla Province, where crane work was underway to move ship blocks.

The suspension order was issued under South Korea’s Occupational Safety and Health Act. The Ministry of Employment and Labor typically orders work stoppages in cases involving fatal industrial accidents. Labor authorities are also investigating whether the company violated the Serious Accidents Punishment Act.

Police have launched a separate probe. The Jeonnam Provincial Police Agency’s Serious Accident Investigation Team is examining whether plant officials may be liable for occupational negligence resulting in death.
