[Alpha Biz= Paul Lee] A class action lawsuit against Samsung Electronics over its Game Optimization Service (GOS) on the Galaxy S22 series has been resolved after nearly four years through a court-mediated settlement.

According to legal sources on March 19, the Seoul High Court issued a compulsory mediation decision in the appellate case filed by around 1,800 Galaxy smartphone users seeking damages from Samsung Electronics. The decision became final after both parties accepted the ruling.

In the initial trial, the court acknowledged that Samsung’s product descriptions and advertisements could have misled consumers but ruled that no compensation was warranted due to insufficient proof of actual damages.

The plaintiffs appealed the decision, after which the appellate court recommended mediation and ultimately issued a binding settlement.

Samsung Electronics chose not to object to the court’s decision in order to bring an end to the prolonged dispute with customers.

The lawsuit stemmed from Samsung’s inclusion of GOS in its Galaxy S22 series, launched in 2022. The feature adjusts GPU performance during high-load activities such as gaming to reduce overheating.

Consumers argued that the function could degrade device performance and was implemented without adequate disclosure, seeking damages of KRW 300,000 per person.
