[Alpha Biz= Paul Lee] Japan’s Nikkei reported on February 21 that SK hynix appears to have explored the possibility of building a memory semiconductor manufacturing plant in Japan.

According to the report, SK hynix is believed to have approached several local governments in Japan to sound out potential candidate sites for a new facility, with the assumption that government subsidies would be provided.

In response, SK Group denied the report, telling Nikkei that it has not reviewed or considered any such plans.

Nikkei added that Chey Tae-won, chairman of SK Group, said in an interview in 2024 that the company was “continuing to examine whether manufacturing could be carried out in other countries such as Japan and the United States,” indicating potential openness to overseas production.
