[Alpha Biz= Kim Jisun] Kyowon Group, the South Korean education conglomerate known for Kumon learning centers and Red Pen tutoring services, has reported a cyberattack affecting multiple subsidiaries, raising concerns over potential personal data exposure.

In a statement posted on its website on Jan. 12, Kyowon said it had detected suspicious activity consistent with ransomware on some of its systems. “Upon detection, we immediately isolated internal networks and implemented emergency controls to contain the threat,” the company said. It added that cybersecurity experts and relevant authorities are collaborating to investigate the source, scope, and potential impact on data, while restoration work is underway.

The attack appears to have affected nearly all of Kyowon’s business units, including its publishing arm, Kumon educational services, Kyowon Wiz early childhood education centers, real estate leasing operations, funeral services, travel agency operations, health supplement manufacturing, and warehousing services.

Kyowon is also conducting a thorough investigation to determine whether any personal information has been compromised.
