[Alpha Biz= Kim Jisun] Archaeological remains have been identified at the planned site of Samsung Electronics’ semiconductor complex in Yongin, prompting additional excavation surveys that could delay the start of construction.

According to the Korea Land and Housing Corporation (LH) on Wednesday, LH has recently begun a preliminary archaeological survey at the Yongin Advanced System Semiconductor Cluster National Industrial Complex. The survey covers an area of approximately 1.19 million square meters in Namsa-eup and Idong-eup, Cheoin-gu, Yongin, Gyeonggi Province.

The site is a core area where Samsung Electronics plans to build six system semiconductor fabrication plants. Samsung recently completed land purchase contracts for the site and has entered compensation negotiations with landowners.

Of the total survey area, approximately 649,914 square meters will undergo trial excavation, while 544,205 square meters will be subject to sample surveys. The sample survey area also includes on-site inspections of seven burial sites.

Industry sources estimate that the archaeological investigation could take up to one year, raising concerns that the groundbreaking schedule for the semiconductor complex may be pushed back.

Samsung Electronics has announced plans to invest more than 360 trillion won ($260 billion) in the Yongin national industrial complex as part of its long-term strategy to strengthen its system semiconductor production capacity.

The Yongin Advanced System Semiconductor Cluster has previously drawn controversy following remarks about a possible relocation of facilities due to power supply constraints. Authorities said administrative procedures are currently proceeding as planned.
