[Alpha Biz= Kim Jisun] Daewoo Engineering & Construction (Daewoo E&C) announced on September 10 that it will suspend all construction work at its sites following the death of a subcontracted worker at a housing project in Siheung, Gyeonggi Province.

In a statement issued under the name of CEO Kim Bo-hyun, the company said:

“We will fully cooperate with the authorities’ investigation and humbly accept the results. We will also take every responsibility and obligation we can toward the deceased and the bereaved family.”

The accident occurred on September 9 at a mixed-use residential complex site being built by Daewoo E&C, where a subcontracted worker was struck by part of a steel staircase being moved by a large crane and died at the scene.

Daewoo E&C stated it would review its entire safety management system from the ground up. Work will only resume after the Chief Safety Officer (CSO) inspects each site’s safety readiness and authorizes resumption.

Additional measures include:

External special inspections of all sites.

Strengthened on-site monitoring during high-risk time periods and unannounced inspections.

Reinforcement of the approval process before high-risk work.

Deployment of safety supervisors on-site.

Expanded staffing of supervisors and safety/health managers.

Special safety training for partner companies.

Tailored safety management measures for foreign workers.

Daewoo E&C emphasized that it will “implement concrete and practical measures that workers can feel in the field, and ensure such a tragic incident will never be repeated.”
