[Alpha Biz=(Chicago) Reporter Kim Jisun] POSCO International enters the US marine carbon storage development project.

POSCO International announced on the 6th that it was selected as the preferred bidder by participating in an international bidding for the carbon capture and storage (CCS) project organized by the Texas Land Management Agency. POSCO International has formed a consortium with global energy companies such as Lepsol in Spain, Carbonbert in the United States, and Mitsui in Japan. The share is 10 %.

The target area for the project is the sea near Corpus Christie, Texas. It is 578㎢ wide, which is similar to the area of Seoul. The consortium decided to decide whether to develop it after conducting a storage evaluation. Once the development begins, it will be possible to inject carbon dioxide into the storage for decades through drilling, platform and undersea pipeline installation. The storage capacity of carbon is estimated at over 600 million tons. This is equivalent to Korea's carbon emissions as of 2020.

The Texas coast is an area where numerous geological data have been accumulated. Based on this, experts say the possibility of development is high because it chose an area that is easy to store carbon dioxide, according to POSCO International.

In addition, on the Texas coast, various carbon emission sources such as cement, petrification and gas refining have been concentrated, and a number of pipelines have been created, making it easy to collect carbon. Corpus Christie on the Texas coast also has the advantage of reducing development costs due to its proximity to carbon emission sources and storage.
