[Alpha Biz= Ellie Kim] Another workplace accident has occurred at a bakery plant operated by Shany, an affiliate of SPC Group (currently SammiDang Holdings), renewing concerns over persistent safety issues across the group’s manufacturing sites.

According to industry sources, a 45-year-old naturalized Vietnamese worker suffered a severe injury on June 10 at approximately 9:38 a.m. at the Shany plant in Daegu. The worker’s right arm was caught in a dough alignment machine, resulting in significant skin damage. The individual was transported to a hospital for treatment.

Police are investigating the exact cause of the accident and whether the company violated the Occupational Safety and Health Act.

SPC Group affiliates have faced a series of serious industrial accidents in recent years. In 2022, a worker in their 20s died after being caught in machinery at an SPL bakery plant in Pyeongtaek. In 2023, a woman in her 50s died in a similar incident at a Shany plant in Seongnam. Another fatal accident occurred in May last year at an SPC Samlip plant in Siheung, where a worker was caught in production equipment. More recently, in April this year, two workers at the same site suffered finger amputations while removing foreign substances from machinery.

Despite these repeated incidents, SPC Group has maintained that it is strengthening safety measures. According to a report submitted to the National Assembly’s Environment and Labor Committee in May last year, the company invested 96.9 billion won to expand safety facilities and automate high-risk processes.

However, the recurrence of similar accidents has raised questions about whether these safety investments have been effectively implemented at the operational level.
