[Alpha Biz= Paul Lee] Kumho Construction issued an apology following a fatal accident at the Dongbuk Line construction site in Jegi-dong, Dongdaemun-gu, Seoul, which claimed the life of one worker on the 29th.
The company released a statement under the name of CEO Jo Wan-seok, saying, “We express our deepest condolences and apologies for the loss of a precious life in the Dongbuk Line construction site accident.” It added, “Above all, we extend our heartfelt condolences and sincere apologies to the bereaved family who lost a loved one in this sudden accident.”
Immediately after the incident, Kumho Construction halted all work at the site and temporarily suspended similar construction processes at other nationwide sites. The company began investigating the cause of the accident and pledged to fully cooperate with relevant authorities and implement measures to prevent recurrence.
The company also stated, “We will do our utmost to support the bereaved family and maintain continuous communication to help alleviate their pain.” It emphasized that the accident will prompt a re-evaluation of Kumho Construction’s safety management system and strengthen preventive safety measures at all sites, with all employees recommitting to workplace safety.
The accident occurred at 10:40 a.m. when a pile of rocks fell at the Dongbuk Line Section 1 construction site in Jegi-dong, hitting a man in his 60s. He was transported to a hospital but later died.
Kumho Construction, the main contractor at the site, had previously experienced another fatal accident at the same location in February, when a subcontractor in his 50s was crushed by a reversing excavator.
