[Alpha Biz= Ellie Kim] Homeplus, currently undergoing rehabilitation proceedings, has seen approximately 2,600 employees leave the company so far this year, according to labor union data.
The Korean Confederation of Trade Unions’ Mart Industry Union reported that Homeplus’ workforce declined from around 18,000 at the end of last year to approximately 15,300 as of the end of April.
In addition, around 3,000 more employees are at risk of losing their jobs after the company decided to suspend operations at 37 of its 104 hypermarket stores nationwide and proceed with store closures.
Homeplus said it plans to offer affected employees either voluntary retirement packages equivalent to three months’ salary or employment stabilization support payments, contingent on emergency operational funding from its creditor group.
Concerns are also growing that further store closures could occur if financial support from creditors is delayed. Out of the 67 hypermarkets that remain in operation, additional shutdowns may be possible under such circumstances.
