[Alpha Biz=(Chicago) Reporter Kim Jisun] LG Energy Solutions announced on the 25th that it will invest its stake in the US Sion Power in partnership with Brix Capital Management, a domestic private equity fund (PE) specializing in battery investment.

Sion Power is a company that develops lithium metal batteries, one of the next generation batteries. According to the agreement between the two companies, the equity ratio and investment amount were not disclosed. Lithium metal batteries use metal instead of graphite in cathode materials of conventional lithium-ion batteries. It is considered one of the next-generation batteries that can reduce weight and volume due to its high energy density per unit.

Sion Power holds a patent related to the cathode protection layer, which is the core of lithium metal batteries. The cathode protection layer technology is a technology that can solve the dendrite (dendrite) phenomenon, which is the biggest disadvantage of lithium metal batteries. LG Energy Solutions explains that Sion Power's lithium metal battery is the same size and weight as conventional lithium-ion batteries, but can store more than 1.5 times more energy.
