[Alpha Biz=(Chicago) Reporter Kim Jisun] The French government has unveiled a bill to revise the law to decide whether to pay subsidies for electric vehicles based on carbon emissions generated during production and transportation.

As a result, Hyundai Motor's Kona will continue to receive subsidies, while Kia's Niro and Soul will be excluded from the list, which will inevitably lead to a drop in sales in the future.

According to the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy on the 18th, France unveiled the application of the so-called "French version of the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA)" on the 14th (local time). According to the reorganization plan, the absolute majority of the 79 vehicles eligible for subsidies announced by France are European models. Most of the vehicles produced in countries far from France, such as Korea, China, and Japan, were excluded. Among Korean cars, only Hyundai's Kona was included in the subsidy. Kia Niro and Soul, which have been subsidized by France, have been excluded. The electric vehicle subsidy reform plan will be applied immediately from the 16th.

The only reason Kona was included in the subsidy list is because it produced vehicles in the Eastern European Czech Republic and cut fewer points in the transportation sector.

The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy said, "We will make an official objection so that Niro, which was excluded from the subsidy, can be recalculated."
