[Alpha Biz= Paul Lee] The Gyeongbuk Provincial Police announced on December 5 that three individuals—including a design contractor for Korea Railroad Corporation (Korail), a subcontractor’s work supervisor, and a railway safety manager—have been arrested on charges of occupational negligence resulting in death.
They are accused of violating safety protocols and deploying workers to the site without proper precautions, leading to a fatal accident on August 19, when a Mugunghwa train struck seven workers near the tracks in Cheongdo, North Gyeongsang Province.
The accident killed two subcontracted workers and injured five others. Police later confirmed that two of the injured or deceased workers were not listed in the original work plan submitted by the subcontractor.
A Daegu District Court judge issued arrest warrants, citing risks of flight and evidence destruction.
Police had sought warrants for five individuals earlier this month, and three were approved.
A total of seven people have been booked in connection with the ongoing investigation.
