[Alpha Biz= Kim Jisun] Hyundai Motor has reportedly decided to postpone the Indonesia launch of its large electric SUV, the Ioniq 9, initially planned for later this year. The move comes amid slowing growth in the EV market and increasing competition from Chinese brands.
According to local media, Hyundai Motor Indonesia (HMID) will not proceed with Ioniq 9 sales in 2025. Although the model appeared in last year’s Indonesian Automotive Industry Association (Gaikindo) wholesale statistics, only one unit of the "Calligraphy AWD" trim was delivered in November 2024 for certification and exhibition purposes—not for actual sale.
HMID’s COO, Franciscus Soerjopranoto, said the company is carefully assessing market conditions and economic factors before deciding on the launch schedule. The Ioniq 9 shares its platform with the Kia EV9, which is priced around 1.9 billion rupiah (~KRW 16.8 million) in Indonesia. Experts note that if launched, the Ioniq 9 would face intense competition from Chinese EV brands in terms of pricing and product appeal.
