[Alpha Biz= Ellie Kim] SEOUL, June 12 — South Korean prosecutors have strengthened their appeal in an insider trading case involving Koo Yeon-kyung, daughter of late Koo Bon-moo, and her husband Yoon Kwan, by assigning two senior investigators to the trial.
According to legal sources on June 11, prosecutors have designated the two officials—who were involved in the original investigation—as “direct trial prosecutors” to handle the appellate proceedings starting July 8.
The move reflects concerns within the prosecution following the couple’s acquittal in February, when the court ruled there was insufficient evidence to prove that non-public information had been shared.
Prosecutors allege that Koo received undisclosed information from Yoon regarding an investment in Mezzion and used it to purchase 35,990 shares in 2023, generating about 100 million won in illicit gains.
However, the lower court found that circumstantial evidence—including Telegram messages and related factors—was not sufficient to support the charges.
Authorities aim to overturn the ruling, noting that insider trading cases often rely on indirect evidence such as communication records, transaction timing, and fund flows. Prosecutors are seeking to establish a precedent as the outcome of the appeal could influence how such cases are proven going forward.
