[Apha Biz=(Chicago) Reporter Paul Lee] The amount of short selling on the local stock market hit a record high last month. The background is that stock prices have surged abnormally as investments in secondary batteries have been driven by individual investors.

According to Koscom on the 1st, the short selling trading volume of KOSPI and KOSDAQ reached 22.8722 trillion won during the month of July, the highest since Koscom began to provide data. In April of this year, the previous record high (19.2077 trillion won) was replaced in three months.

Short selling volume by market is also the highest ever. KOSPI recorded 14.4 trillion won and KOSDAQ 8.4295 trillion won, respectively. The KOSPI jumped twice and the KOSDAQ five times compared to January. By category, secondary battery stocks ranked first to fifth. POSCO Holdings had the largest amount of KRW 2.5 trillion, followed by KOSDAQ-listed EcoproBM with KRW 2.4 trillion. LG Energy Solutions (1.4 trillion won), POSCO Future M (1.2 trillion won), and Ecopro (900 billion won).

Behind the surge in the amount of short selling is a surge in secondary battery stocks. As stock prices soared due to a surge in investment centered on individuals, a large number of foreigners and other investors who expected stock prices to fall in the future started short selling.
