[Alpha Biz= Reporter Kim Jisun] In the third quarter of this year, Samsung Electronics' semiconductor revenue is expected to have fallen below that of Taiwan's TSMC, the world’s leading foundry (semiconductor contract manufacturing) company.

While Samsung has been losing ground in the AI memory sector, TSMC has capitalized on the global AI chip boom, fueled by producing chips for AI leader Nvidia, setting record-breaking revenues.

According to industry reports on the 20th, Samsung Electronics' consolidated sales for the third quarter were estimated at 79 trillion won, a 17.21% increase year-over-year and a 6.66% rise from the previous quarter. Although Samsung did not break down its earnings by division in its preliminary report on October 8, the revenue from its Device Solutions (DS) division, which handles the semiconductor business, is expected to remain close to the previous quarter’s 28.56 trillion won.

Analysts have projected DS division sales in the third quarter to range from 27.424 trillion won (Sangsangin Securities) to 30.781 trillion won (Yuanta Securities).

On the other hand, TSMC reported third-quarter revenue of NT$759.69 billion (approximately 32.3 trillion won) on October 17, marking a 39% year-on-year increase and setting a new record for quarterly sales.
