[Alpha Biz= Paul Lee] South Korean actress Nana (real name Im Jin-ah), formerly of the girl group After School, and her mother have been cleared of any wrongdoing after police ruled that the injuries inflicted on a home intruder during a struggle constituted legitimate self-defense.
The Guri Police Station announced on the 22nd that a man in his 30s, identified as A, who was arrested on charges of aggravated robbery resulting in injury, will be referred to prosecutors on the 24th.
According to police, A broke into Nana’s residence in Guri’s Acheon-dong at around 6 a.m. on November 15, armed with a weapon. Nana and her mother engaged in a physical struggle to stop him, during which A sustained a laceration to his jaw caused by the weapon he had been carrying.
Police reviewed statements from both the victims and the suspect to determine whether the force used by the victims fell under Article 21(1) of the Criminal Act, which permits acts committed to protect oneself or others from “imminent and unjust infringement,” provided the response is deemed reasonable.
A police official stated, “There was a real and imminent threat to the victims, and the injuries inflicted on the suspect were not excessive. After a comprehensive review, we determined that their actions constituted legitimate self-defense.” Accordingly, no charges were filed against Nana or her mother.
A filed a request for a bail review on November 18, claiming police failed to properly deliver the Miranda warning during his arrest. The court dismissed the petition, and his detention period was extended. He is scheduled to be formally handed over to prosecutors on November 24.
Investigators found that A had no occupation and that the attack was not related to stalking, fandom, or targeting a specific celebrity. He reportedly climbed to the apartment balcony using a ladder he brought, entered through an unlocked door, and assaulted Nana’s mother upon encountering her. Hearing her mother’s screams, Nana confronted the intruder, and the two women subdued him by restraining his arm until police arrived.
Nana’s agency confirmed that her mother sustained injuries during the struggle and is receiving treatment, while Nana also suffered wounds that required medical care.
