[Alpha Biz= Kim Jisun] The South Korean government has decided to provide a total of $2.5 million in humanitarian assistance to Iran and Lebanon, both affected by the ongoing Middle East conflict.

On April 14, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that it will allocate $500,000 to Iran and $2 million to Lebanon, in response to requests for humanitarian support from the international community, including the United Nations.

Accordingly, the aid to Lebanon will be delivered through international organizations such as UNICEF and UNHCR, totaling $2 million. For Iran, $500,000 will be provided through the International Committee of the Red Cross.

Requests for humanitarian assistance had already been issued about a month earlier. UNHCR called for emergency support for Lebanon on March 13, while the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies issued an emergency appeal for Iran on March 6.

Some within the government had suggested that humanitarian aid to Iran could help facilitate the safe passage of 26 Korean vessels stranded in the Strait of Hormuz. However, the government clarified that its humanitarian support to Iran will continue independently of the Hormuz situation.
