[Alpha Biz= Kim Jisun] Hyundai Steel's Suncheon plant, which produces cold-rolled steel sheets, will go on a partial strike for two days on March 6-7. Meanwhile, the Dangjin plant, another key cold-rolled steel producer, remains non-operational due to ongoing strikes and a factory lockout.
According to the steel industry on Wednesday, Hyundai Steel's labor union at the Suncheon plant has decided to conduct an eight-hour partial strike each day on March 6 and 7 at its 1CGL, 2CGL, and 3CGL galvanizing lines.
The Suncheon plant has an annual production capacity of 2 million tons of cold-rolled steel, a crucial material used in automobiles, home appliances, and industrial machinery.
The labor dispute began on January 22, when a strike halted cold-rolled steel production at the Dangjin plant. In response, Hyundai Steel implemented a factory lockout on February 24, shutting down rolling facilities at the Dangjin steelworks.
A lockout is a tactic used by employers during labor disputes to shut down operations and enforce their stance. With both the Suncheon and Dangjin plants facing strikes and lockouts, Hyundai Steel is expected to face disruptions in cold-rolled steel production.
Since September 2023, the company and the labor union have been negotiating wage and collective bargaining agreements, but disagreements over base salary increases and performance bonuses remain unresolved.
