[Alpha Biz= Kim Jisun] SEOUL, August 25, 2025 — The Financial Services Commission (FSC) has initiated an investigation into allegations that auditors from public institutions engaged in overseas junket-style trips.

According to the financial investment industry on August 25, the FSC began a two-day review of detailed itineraries, expenses, and related documentation from all affiliated agencies whose auditors participated in the World Congress of Accountants held in Canada. Institutions under scrutiny reportedly include the Korea Exchange (KRX) and the Korea Securities Depository (KSD).

An official from one of the institutions under review commented, “Our auditors only attended the official academic conference sessions and did not participate in sightseeing activities. Nevertheless, we will fully cooperate with the investigation.”

The World Congress of Accountants took place in Toronto last month. However, reports revealed that several standing auditors from domestic public institutions privately arranged visits to tourist destinations such as Niagara Falls, whisky distilleries, and outlet shopping malls, sparking public criticism.

The ruling Democratic Party of Korea has condemned the trips, noting that the auditors were appointed during the Yoon Suk-yeol administration and allegedly embarked on “last-minute junkets” before the end of their terms. The party has called for the voluntary resignation of those involved.
