[Alpha Biz= Reporter Kim Jisun] On October 4, the South Korean government will assess whether Korea Zinc’s precursor manufacturing technology qualifies as national core technology.
According to industry sources on October 3, the Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Energy (MOTIE) will convene a committee of experts to review Korea Zinc's request for this classification.
Korea Zinc submitted the application on September 24, seeking to have its "high-nickel precursor processing patent technology" recognized as either a national advanced strategic technology or national core technology.
The technology in question pertains to the "design, manufacturing, and processing of precursors for cathode active materials containing over 80% nickel for lithium-ion batteries." Industry insiders believe the technology's complexity is not excessive, suggesting that a final decision could be reached on the same day as the review.
