[Alpha Biz= Paul Lee] Samsung SDI has secured a large-scale supply deal to provide energy storage system (ESS) batteries to NextEra Energy, the largest power company in the U.S.

On Thursday, Samsung SDI announced a contract worth KRW 437.4 billion ($330 million) with NextEra Energy for the supply of ESS batteries. The deal accounts for approximately 1.93% of Samsung SDI’s recent revenue.

Samsung SDI stated, "The ESS supply to NextEra Energy will be carried out through multiple projects, and this disclosure pertains to a specific project for which a contract has been signed. Future supply contracts will be disclosed in accordance with relevant reporting standards as they are finalized."

Previously, in July 2023, Samsung SDI was reported to be in the final stages of securing a contract to supply a total of 6.3 GWh of batteries to NextEra Energy. This total supply volume accounts for 11.5% of North America's entire ESS capacity in 2023 (55 GWh), with an estimated contract value of approximately KRW 1 trillion ($750 million).

The primary product supplied to NextEra Energy is the Samsung Battery Box (SBB).

SBB is a standardized 20-foot container-based ESS solution that integrates batteries with safety and cooling systems, allowing for easy grid connection and immediate use as an ESS. Its modular design enhances transportation and installation convenience.

At the recently held InterBattery 2025 exhibition, Samsung SDI showcased its SBB 1.5, which features an optimized internal structure, increasing capacity by 37% compared to the previous SBB 1.0 model. Additionally, it incorporates a third-generation embedded direct injection (EDI) fire suppression system, significantly improving safety.
