[Alpha Biz= Paul Lee] Amazon Web Services (AWS), the world’s leading cloud computing provider, will invest an additional KRW 7 trillion in South Korea by 2031 to expand its data center infrastructure and strengthen its artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities.
According to industry sources on March 31, AWS Korea disclosed through the Korea Internet & Security Agency (KISA) portal that the investment will support the expansion of AI and cloud computing infrastructure. Combined with the KRW 5.6 trillion invested since 2018, AWS’s total investment in Korea will reach approximately KRW 12.6 trillion—the largest ever announced by a global cloud provider in the country.
Matt Garman, CEO of AWS, previously pledged during the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in Gyeongju last October to invest more than $5 billion in Korea, including the construction of new AI data centers in the Incheon and Gyeonggi regions.
AWS Korea estimates that its investments between 2023 and 2027 alone will contribute approximately KRW 15.06 trillion to South Korea’s gross domestic product (GDP).
The move is widely seen as part of AWS’s strategy to further widen the gap with domestic cloud providers by leveraging its significant capital resources. As generative AI services require massive computing power, securing infrastructure leadership is expected to provide AWS with a competitive edge in both service reliability and performance.
In parallel, AWS plans to deploy generative AI technologies across its security operations, including incident investigation, reinforcing its positioning as a trusted and secure cloud provider amid growing demand for AI-driven services.
