[Alpha Biz=(Chicago) Reporter Kim Jisun] Labor unions of HD Hyundai Heavy Industries and HJ Heavy Industries urged the government to come up with measures to combine businesses against Hanwha Group's acquisition of Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering.
The Hyundai Heavy Industries branch and the HJ Heavy Industries branch of the Korean Metal Workers' Union said in a press conference on the 11th, "We cannot help but be concerned if the Fair Trade Commission approves the business combination without a fair competition plan in the special ship sector in Hanwha Group's push to acquire Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering."
The labor union feared that the acquisition of Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering would solidify its monopoly structure, with Hanwha Group in an exclusive position in the defense sector. There are only four companies in Korea that can make special ships, submarines and ships: HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering, HJ Heavy Industries and SK Ocean Plant.
They believe that Hanwha Group may sell defense parts to Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co. at a lower price or provide more parts-related information than its competitors. It is possible to offer relatively high prices to competitors and provide technical information differently, and it was argued that countermeasures and safeguards should be prepared.
