[Alpha Biz=(Chicago) Reporter Kim Jisun] LG Energy Solutions has decided to increase production at its current battery plant in Canada by 10%. Samsung SDI also said it will expand its U.S. plant and add a second plant.

According to the industry on the 2nd, Lee Hoon-sung, CEO of Next Star Energy, a Canadian joint venture between LG Energy Solutions and Stellatis, said in a recent local media interview that he plans to increase the joint plant production capacity by about 10% from 45 GWh (Gigawatt hour) to 49 GWh per year.

The battery cell plant in Ontario, Canada, where LG Energy Solutions and Stellatis have invested about $ 4 billion (about 5 trillion won), is currently under construction with the aim of operating next year. It was also planning to produce batteries for plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) as well as pure electric vehicles (BEVs). However, the track was revised to expand the volume of high-performance batteries while scrapping the existing parallel production plan to focus on pure electric vehicles.

The plant will produce about 500,000 batteries per year for electric vehicles.

Samsung SDI has also started to expand. The company announced on the 24th of last month that it would build a second joint factory with Stellatis. Indiana's first plant, which is currently being built with the aim of operating in 2025, will also increase its annual production from 23 GWh to 33 GWh.
