[Alpha Biz=(Chicago) Reporter Kim Jisun] Korean Air's second-quarter sales increased on the back of a recovery in passenger demand, but its operating profit fell 36 percent.

Korean Air announced on the 2nd that it recorded sales of 3.5354 trillion won and operating profit of 468 billion won based on consolidated results in the 2nd quarter.

Sales rose 6% year-on-year, and operating profit fell 36%.

"Sales in the second quarter increased 6% year-on-year thanks to a rapid recovery in passenger demand, and operating profit also led to positive performance," Korean Air said. "As supply increased, airport costs and operating costs also increased, and operating profit decreased slightly from the same period last year."

Passenger sales in the second quarter rose 20 percent on-quarter to 2.221 trillion won, up 154 percent from a year earlier.

Freight sales fell 56 percent on-year to 963.8 billion won due to falling demand.
