[Alpha Biz=(Chicago) Reporter Paul Lee] Samsung Electronics and Dutch semiconductor equipment maker ASML have decided to spend 1 trillion won to build a R & D center in Korea.

Analysts say that Samsung Electronics, a global leader in semiconductor manufacturing, and ASML, which holds an unrivaled position in the equipment field, have joined forces to lead the future semiconductor market.

SK Hynix decided to jointly develop a technology to recycle hydrogen gas for extreme ultraviolet (EUV) exposure equipment with ASML.

Samsung Electronics and ASML signed an MOU at ASML headquarters in the Netherlands on the 12th (local time) to establish and jointly operate a center to study next-generation semiconductor manufacturing technology by investing a total of 1 trillion won starting next year.

The hydrogen gas recycling technology, jointly developed by SK Hynix and ASML, can reduce power consumption by 20% per EUV when commercialized.
