[Alpha Biz= Reporter Kim Jisun] S-Oil has activated an emergency response system and is working on measures to manage and recover from a large fire that broke out at its Onsan plant in Ulsan.

The fire at the Onsan plant in Ulju-gun, Ulsan, was extinguished after approximately 4 hours and 40 minutes. According to industry sources, S-Oil is collaborating with firefighting authorities to determine the exact cause of the fire and assess the extent of the damage. Additionally, the company is devising strategies to mitigate the impact of the production halt and ensure that there are no disruptions in supply.

The fire occurred at S-Oil's No. 2 paraxylene (PX) plant. S-Oil operates another plant, No. 1, at the same Onsan site. Paraxylene is a raw material used to produce polyester, which is utilized in fast fashion clothing, fabrics, and PET bottles.

The fire started at approximately 4:48 a.m. and was accompanied by an explosion. The fire is suspected to have originated inside a heater involved in the production of mixed xylene. This process does not involve the presence of workers, which is why there were no reports of casualties or injuries as workers evacuated safely.
