Hyundai-Seoul National University opens Joint Battery Research Center

[Alpha Biz=(Chicago) Reporter Paul Lee] Hyundai Motor Group will open a joint battery research center at Seoul National University to secure leadership in future electric vehicle technology and start full-fledged research on next-generation batteries.

Hyundai Motor Group and Seoul National University held an opening ceremony for the "Hyundai Motor Group-Seoul National University Battery Joint Research Center" at Seoul National University's Gwanak Campus on the 25th. The opening ceremony was attended by Hyundai Motor Group Chairman Chung Eui-sun and Seoul National University President Yoo Hong-rim.

"We are developing a variety of mobility with excellent batteries because of our mission to hand over a sustainable environment to the next generation," Chairman Chung Eui-sun said in a congratulatory speech. "We ask everyone participating in the joint battery research center to take the lead in transforming the mobility industry with innovative research and development."

The joint research center will carry out a total of 22 joint research projects, focusing on four divisions: △Lithium Metal Battery △ Solid Battery △ Battery Management System △ Battery Process Technology. A total of 21 professors from Korean universities, including Seoul National University, KAIST (KAIST· Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology), UNIST· Ulsan Institute of Science and Technology, DGIST· Daegu Gyeongbuk Institute of Science and Technology, Hanyang University, Sungkyunkwan University and Chungnam National University, will participate.

Of the total 22 research projects, 14 are related to lithium metal batteries and all-solid batteries.

Hyundai Motor Group explained that it is an extension of the open cooperation related to batteries that the joint research center has been promoting. Hyundai Motor Group will invest 9.5 trillion won in the battery sector over the next 10 years to actively improve battery performance, develop next-generation battery technologies and build infrastructure. The company plans to lower battery costs to 75% of the price in 2018 and 45% in 2030.
