[Alpha Biz=(Chicago) Reporter Kim Jisun] Negotiations broke down after labor and management of Samsung Display failed to narrow differences over the wage increase rate.
The labor union, the representative bargaining group of Samsung Display, said on the 24th that it will apply for dispute mediation with the National Labor Relations Commission.
Samsung Display's labor and management held the 10th round of negotiations on wages and collective agreements the previous day, but failed to reach an agreement. When the negotiations broke down, the Open Labor Union said to its members, "We are trying to apply for mediation of labor disputes with the National Labor Relations Commission."
If the union applies for mediation, the National Labor Relations Commission will listen to the opinions of both labor and management based on the application and present an arbitration proposal after a 10-day mediation period.
If the two sides fail to narrow their differences during the adjustment period, they will decide to suspend the adjustment. The suspension of mediation is made if either labor and management reject the mediation proposal proposed by the National Labor Relations Commission or if there is a wide gap between the two sides.
If the National Labor Relations Commission decides to suspend mediation, the union can secure legitimate right to dispute and start collective action such as strikes.
The labor union of Samsung Display also applied for dispute mediation with the National Labor Relations Commission in May 2021 and obtained the right to dispute. Fourteen days after the first-ever strike, led by union officials at the time, the union accepted the wage increase rate of 4.5%, which was confirmed by the existing labor-management council.
