[Alpha Biz= Reporter Kim Sangjin] Samsung Electronics has ended its collaboration with Naver on AI semiconductor development. Instead, Samsung will shift its focus to developing its own AI accelerators and seeking new major clients.

According to the Seoul Economic Daily on the 19th, Samsung's System LSI division, responsible for AI accelerators, has decided to terminate its joint AI semiconductor development project with Naver.

The two companies had been working together on an AI accelerator optimized for server inference, named "Maha." This partnership garnered attention due to the firms' reputations in semiconductor design and AI model engineering. The collaboration was expected to benefit from Naver's extensive experience with NVIDIA's GPUs for various services.

However, they concluded that the future mass-produced product might struggle to be competitive in the market. It is anticipated that bringing Maha to production could take an additional 1-2 years, while the rapidly evolving AI service landscape has made profitability challenging. Industry estimates suggest that the development costs for Maha could reach at least 100 billion KRW.
