[Alpha Biz=(Chicago) Reporter Kim Jisun] Hanjin announced on the 12th that it achieved sales of 688.1 billion won and operating profit of 33.7 billion won in the second quarter of this year (April to June). Sales fell 3.7 percent and operating profit rose 3.4 percent from the same period last year. Compared to the first quarter of this year (January to March), it rose 1.9% and 43.4%, respectively.

As a result, sales and operating profit in the first half of this year (January to June) recorded 1.3632 trillion won and 57.2 billion won, respectively. Sales and operating profit fell 4% and 14.6%, respectively, from a year ago.

Sales in the first half of this year are less than half of Hanjin's annual target sales. Hanjin has set its sales target at 3.7 trillion won and operating profit at 140 billion won this year. In the first half of the year, operating profit is only 41% of the annual target.

Hanjin sales account for 53% of parcel delivery, 38% of logistics, and 9% of global sales. The drop in performance in the first half of this year is attributed to the weakening of the courier business. The industry expects the delivery business, which led to sales growth until last year, to slow down this year due to the economic downturn.
