[Alpha Biz=(Chicago) Reporter Kim Jisun] SK ON caught fire at an electric vehicle battery plant that was preparing to operate in Yancheng, Jiangsu Province, China. The fire also raised the possibility of changing the operation schedule of the new plant.

According to SK On the 21st, a fire broke out at Yancheng Plant 2, which was on a trial run at around 2:50 p.m. (local time), and a fire truck was dispatched to extinguish the fire.

An official of SK ON said, "We know that there is a fire in the pipe in the factory," he said. "All employees were evacuated, so there were no casualties." SK ON is figuring out the cause of the fire and the extent of the damage with local fire authorities.

Yancheng Plant 2, which caught fire, was reportedly undergoing a trial run for mass production in the second quarter of 2024 after completing construction recently. The fire is likely to delay the full-scale operation of the plant, but SK On intends to finalize the timing of mass production after completing its investigation into the fire. Earlier, SK ON announced that it will invest about 3 trillion won to build the Yancheng 2nd plant in 2021.
