KOSPI Holds Above 4,100 Despite Continued Foreign Selling; KOSDAQ Closes Higher

[Alpha Biz= Kim Jisun] SEOUL, Dec. 9 — Despite continued foreign selling, the KOSPI managed to hold above the 4,100 level and ended the session slightly lower.

The benchmark KOSPI closed at 4,143.55, down 0.27% from the previous day. After opening marginally weaker at 4,129.77, the index traded in a narrow range and maintained the 4,100 level throughout the session.

By investor type, foreign investors were the sole net sellers, offloading 210 billion won, while retail investors and institutions net bought 135 billion won and 14.1 billion won, respectively.

Sector performance was mixed. Gains were seen in metals (+1.35%), pharmaceuticals (+1.20%), non-metal materials (+1.16%), entertainment & culture (+0.86%), and transportation equipment & parts (+0.79%). Declining sectors included electricity & gas (-1.51%), electronics (-1.20%), and securities (-0.67%).

Among large-cap stocks, more names declined than advanced. Notable losers included Hyundai Motor (-2.8%), SK Hynix (-1.9%), LG Energy Solution (-1.7%), Kia (-1.5%), and KB Financial (-1.4%). In contrast, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (+6.0%), Hanwha Aerospace (+2.2%), and Samsung BioLogics (+1.6%) posted gains.

The KOSDAQ finished 0.38% higher at 931.35, reversing early weakness and holding above the 930 level.

This came despite simultaneous net selling from foreigners and institutions, which offloaded 67.4 billion won and 134.9 billion won, respectively. Retail investors supported the market with 257.3 billion won in net purchases.

Most KOSDAQ sectors recorded gains, led by pharmaceuticals (+1.32%), construction (+0.95%), transportation & warehousing (+0.59%), and electronics (+0.56%). Other manufacturing (-0.64%) and transportation equipment & parts (-0.58%) were among the declining sectors.

Among the KOSDAQ top 10 by market capitalization, Samchundang Pharm posted the largest increase, surging 8.8%. It was followed by EcoPro BM (+5.0%), Rainbow Robotics (+2.6%), and EcoPro BM (+0.2%). On the downside, HLB (-0.9%), ABL Bio (-0.3%), Alteogen (-0.1%), and LegoChem Biosciences (-0.1%) declined.
