[Alpha Biz= Paul Lee] Samsung Electronics has transitioned to a single leadership structure with Vice Chairman Jeon Young-hyun taking over as the sole CEO following the sudden passing of Vice Chairman Han Jong-hee. This change occurred just six days after the company had reinstated a two-CEO system with Han and Jeon at the helm during the annual shareholder meeting on March 19.
On March 25, Samsung Electronics announced that it would revise its leadership structure, with Jeon Young-hyun becoming the sole CEO due to Han's unexpected passing.
Han Jong-hee was a remarkable figure who spent 37 years at Samsung Electronics, rising from a regular employee to the position of Vice Chairman. He was instrumental in the company's success, particularly in establishing Samsung's leadership in the global TV market. Han held several key positions, including heading the Consumer Experience (DX) division, overseeing the Digital Appliances (DA) business, and chairing the Quality Innovation Committee. His leadership was crucial in guiding the company through challenging times.
Up until his passing, Han continued to play an active role in management. During the March 19 shareholder meeting, he emphasized Samsung's commitment to reinforcing its leadership in existing businesses through advanced technology and focusing on new growth drivers in the AI industry. Following the shareholder meeting, he attended the AWE 2025 in Shanghai, where he focused on strategies for regaining market leadership in China and reinforcing technological dominance in home appliances.
With Han's sudden death, Samsung faces an unavoidable leadership gap. Given his involvement in various critical roles, finding a successor to fill his shoes will take time.
In an internal announcement, Samsung Electronics expressed condolences, saying, "We mourn the passing of Vice Chairman Han Jong-hee, who devoted 37 years of service to the company. He led the global TV business to the number one position and always gave his best as head of the Consumer Electronics division and DA business unit, especially in challenging circumstances."
The company’s labor unions also expressed their grief. The National Samsung Electronics Labor Union (Jeonsamno) and Samsung Electronics Union Fellowship (Samsung Electronics Workers' Solidarity) posted tributes on their websites, mourning the loss of Han Jong-hee.
