[Alpha Biz= Paul Lee] SoftBank Group, led by Chairman Masayoshi Son, announced on the 26th that it has completed the acquisition of U.S.-based semiconductor design company Ampere Computing for $6.5 billion, making it a wholly owned subsidiary.

In a press release, SoftBank stated that its subsidiary SB6 has acquired all outstanding shares of Ampere, noting that the deal will enable strategic collaboration with Arm Holdings—another SoftBank subsidiary—and further integrate Ampere’s technical expertise into Arm’s chip development.

Founded in 2017, Ampere Computing is a U.S. semiconductor design firm with approximately 1,000 engineers and is known for its strengths in large-scale data processing and artificial intelligence (AI) workloads.

SoftBank had initially announced its plan to acquire Ampere in March. Prior to the transaction, Ampere’s ownership was as follows:

The Carlyle Group: 59.65%

Oracle Corporation: 32.27%

Arm-affiliated entities: 8.08%

SoftBank Group acquired Arm in 2016 for approximately ¥3.3 trillion (about USD 32 billion) and listed the company on the Nasdaq in September 2023. Arm remains a core pillar of SoftBank’s global AI strategy.
