[Alpha Biz= Kim Jisun] Tesla has successfully completed what it claims to be the world’s first fully autonomous vehicle delivery, demonstrating its latest Full Self-Driving (FSD) technology in real-world conditions on public roads in Texas.
On June 27 (local time), Tesla announced that a driverless Model Y was delivered from the company's Gigafactory Texas to a customer’s apartment without any human intervention or remote control. The vehicle traveled approximately 15 miles (24 kilometers) over 30 minutes, smoothly navigating highway lanes, overtaking slower vehicles, and decelerating at traffic signals before coming to a safe stop at its destination.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk took to X (formerly Twitter) to celebrate the achievement:
“The first Tesla Model Y autonomous delivery was completed a day ahead of schedule. There was no human in the car, and it was not remotely controlled at any point. To the best of my knowledge, this is the first time a car has been delivered via full autonomy on public roads.”
This marks a significant milestone in Tesla’s deployment of its Full Self-Driving (FSD) system, which was recently rolled out for robo-taxi trials in Texas starting June 22. The successful delivery highlights the technology’s potential not only for ride-hailing but also for last-mile logistics and consumer vehicle handoffs.
The video footage shared by Tesla showed the Model Y adhering to local speed limits and highway regulations. According to Ashok Elluswamy, Tesla’s Head of Autopilot and AI, the vehicle reached speeds of up to 72 mph (116 km/h)—well within the U.S. highway speed limits of 65–75 mph (105–121 km/h).
Tesla’s accomplishment could accelerate adoption of autonomous technologies in the mobility sector, though regulatory and safety hurdles remain in various jurisdictions.
