[Alpha Biz= Kim Jisun] Washington, D.C. — July 9, 2025 — Former U.S. President Donald Trump announced sweeping new tariff measures on copper and pharmaceutical imports, with further trade actions on semiconductors also under consideration.

During a Cabinet meeting at the White House on Tuesday, Trump stated, “Today, we are taking action on copper,” adding that the tariff on copper imports would be set at 50%. He did not specify when the new tariff would take effect.

On pharmaceuticals, Trump warned that tariffs could reach as high as 200%, saying, “We’re going to give pharmaceutical companies about a year to a year and a half to establish production facilities within the United States.”

He also reiterated plans to impose tariffs on semiconductors but provided no details regarding timing or rates.

Following Trump’s comments, copper prices surged. September copper futures on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (COMEX) rose 10.5% from the previous trading session, reaching a record high.
