[Alpha Biz= Reporter Kim Jisun] Electronics has acquired the European smart home platform company Athom. LG announced on the 3rd that it has acquired an 80% stake in Athom, which is headquartered in Enschede, Netherlands, and has signed a contract to purchase the remaining 20% within the next three years. The specific acquisition amount was not disclosed.

Athom is known for its smart home hub 'Homey,' which connects home appliances and Internet of Things (IoT) devices. Homey integrates various connection methods, such as Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, to control and automate multiple smart devices from a single central system. The 'Homey Pro,' launched in 2019, can connect over 50,000 types of appliances and IoT devices.

Over the past decade, Athom has grown primarily in the European market, gaining a loyal customer base. It expanded its market presence to Australia, Singapore, and last year, to the United States and Canada.

LG Electronics plans to enhance its smart home platform, 'LG ThinQ,' by leveraging Athom's open ecosystem, significantly boosting the scalability needed to implement an 'AI home.'
