[Alpha Biz= Kim Jisun] Doosan Enerbility is reportedly nearing a contract with U.S.-based NuScale Power for the supply of components for small modular reactors (SMRs), a deal that could mark a major milestone in Doosan’s USD 104 million (KRW 130 billion) equity investment in NuScale aimed at securing SMR manufacturing technology.

According to industry sources on August 10, NuScale Power, which in May received Standard Design Approval (SDA) for its 77 MW module, is currently in discussions with U.S. utilities and major tech companies on potential SMR projects. Market expectations suggest that a contract between NuScale, a U.S. utility, and a big tech partner could be signed as early as the second half of this year, raising the likelihood that Doosan will secure an SMR order within 2024.

Doosan Enerbility has set its SMR-related order guidance for this year at approximately KRW 500 billion, covering long-lead materials and partial fabrication of major reactor equipment. “Doosan Enerbility is collaborating with multiple SMR design firms, including NuScale Power, X-energy, and TerraPower, and is expanding its potential order pipeline,” said Choi Kyu-heon, Senior Research Analyst at Shinhan Investment & Securities.

The anticipated order is expected to prompt Doosan Enerbility to move forward with facility investments for a dedicated SMR production line, a plan that had previously been delayed due to market uncertainty. Industry analysts note that if Doosan secures projects with additional SMR developers in the future, further capital investment may follow.
