[Alpha Biz= Reporter Kim Jisun] Chinese international students who illegally filmed a U.S. nuclear-powered aircraft carrier in Busan in June using a drone were found to have additional images of other military facilities on their phones.
According to reports on the 14th from Newsis, the Busan Metropolitan Police Agency has booked three Chinese students in their 30s and 40s without detention on charges of violating the Military Base and Military Facilities Protection Act.
The students allegedly used a drone on June 25 near a mountain close to the Busan Operations Base of the Naval Operations Command in Nam-gu, Busan, to film the USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN-71, 100,000 tons) docked there. President Yoon Suk-yeol boarded the Roosevelt that day to inspect the carrier and show support for Korean and U.S. military personnel.
The students were apprehended by patrolling soldiers while filming. During police questioning, they claimed they did it out of curiosity.
However, forensic analysis of their phones revealed numerous photos of other military facilities, including additional aircraft carriers. They were also reportedly found to have contact information for Chinese public security officials.
The students, enrolled in master’s and doctoral programs at a national university in Busan, have been placed under a travel ban.
A police official stated, "As this is an ongoing investigation, we cannot disclose further details."
