[Alpha Biz= Reporter Kim Jisun] At around 2:14 a.m. on the 14th, a fire broke out in an electric vehicle that was charging in the underground parking lot of an apartment complex in Mojong-dong, Asan, South Chungcheong Province.
The automated fire alarm system detected the fire, and emergency responders arrived on the scene within five minutes. A total of 85 firefighters and 27 pieces of equipment, including fire trucks and fire suppression blankets, were deployed, and the fire was fully extinguished after about two hours.
The incident did not lead to thermal runaway, preventing the fire from spreading to other vehicles or the building. However, one nearby vehicle sustained soot damage, and the electric car was destroyed, resulting in property damage estimated at approximately 32 million KRW.
Although no injuries were reported, at least several dozen apartment residents evacuated as a precaution.
The flames reportedly focused on the underside and motor room (front section) of the vehicle. The electric car involved was a Mercedes-Benz EQC400 4MATIC model, equipped with a domestic battery.
Police and fire authorities are investigating the exact cause of the fire, considering the owner’s statement that the car was left charging overnight.
