[Alpha Biz= Reporter Kim Jisun] The cause of death for three Hyundai Motor researchers, who died during a vehicle test at the company’s Ulsan plant, has been confirmed as carbon monoxide poisoning.
On the 8th, the Ulsan Metropolitan Police Agency announced that it had received autopsy results from the National Forensic Service confirming this conclusion.
The police plan to focus their investigation on how the researchers were exposed to carbon monoxide, whether there were issues with the exhaust and ventilation systems, and whether Hyundai complied with safety and health protocols.
The accident occurred on the afternoon of November 19 in a sealed vehicle performance testing chamber within the plant’s Electrification Quality Division, where the researchers were conducting idling (engine running at idle) tests.
On November 22, the police formed a dedicated investigation team of 23 officers to uncover the facts of the incident. They also conducted a search and seizure at the Ulsan plant on December 2, obtaining related documents. Separately, the Ministry of Employment and Labor is conducting a special inspection on industrial safety regarding the accident.
