[Alpha Biz= Reporter Kim Jisun] Tesla's electric vehicle sales in Europe have decreased by nearly 20%, reflecting the impact of delays in new model launches and the aging of existing models.
According to the electric vehicle statistics site 'EU-EVs' on the 18th, the cumulative number of new Tesla registrations in 15 European countries from January to July this year was 147,581. This represents a 17.7% decline compared to 179,358 registrations during the same period last year. In terms of absolute numbers, this is a drop of over 30,000 vehicles.
Up until March, Tesla's registration figures were similar to those of the previous year. However, since April, the gap compared to the same period last year has widened significantly.
The decline in Tesla sales in Europe is also evident from other statistics. According to the U.S. automotive media outlet CarScoops, Tesla's Model Y ranked 8th in the new car sales rankings for the European Union (EU) and the UK in the first half of this year, with 101,181 units sold.
The Model Y, a mid-size SUV, was the top-selling vehicle in the same rankings for the first half of last year. Within a year, it has dropped to 8th place in Europe’s best-selling cars.
The Model Y has been sold in Europe since 2020. Due to this, it is considered relatively outdated compared to other electric vehicles released this year.
